The Formation and Rise of #WocAffirmation
Last week, @ReignofApril had twitter buzzing with #WOCaffirmation. Of course, this is not the first time her ideas have been buzzing. Last year she pioneered #OscarsSoWhite, in response to the very homogeneous nominees, being mostly white and male directors and actors, which many called a blatant disregard of the work done by People of Colour.
This is where Women of Colour were encouraged to tweet their art, business, music, using the hashtag for promotional purposes between the groups. It took off on the night of October 12, until sunrise on the 13th, where it trended at number 4.
Clarkisha Kent used the hashtag to acknowledge her writing, which have been featured in The Root, BET and Equality for her, among others.
The aim of the hashtag is written in the name. It is self-explanatory, it is for Women of Colour to affirm one another, and more importantly themselves, their work, their labour and the fruits of those labour. It has to amplify the countless hours that are often disregarded, and note their accomplishments in the face of adversity.
